Sharon L. Dykes, MD, FACS, FASCRS is a board certified colon and rectal surgeon and Medical Director of Minnesota Colon and Rectal Surgical Specialists, PLLC (MNCRSS). Dr. Dykes holds a clinical appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery (ABCRS). She is an active Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
Dr. Dykes completed her undergraduate studies and medical degree from Brown University in 1988 and 1991, respectively. Subsequently, she completed her residency in General Surgery and fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota. During her fellowship, she was recruited by Colon and Rectal Surgery Associates, Ltd. (CRSAL) where, for over six years, she consistently delivered high-quality patient care and rapidly rose to leadership positions as a partner in the practice and member of the practice’s Board of Directors. Recognizing the desperate need for an alternative to the status quo, Dr. Dykes left CRSAL to blaze the trail for Minnesota Colon and Rectal Surgical Specialists – a single specialty practice dedicated to delivering the highest quality colon and rectal patient care, research and education in a “decidedly different” manner.
Dr. Dykes’ special interests include hereditary and familial predisposition to colon and rectal cancer and its association with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. She has long been a leader amongst her peers in using minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgical techniques in both adults and children.
Dr. Dykes has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters in leading specialty textbooks. She is a frequent lecturer at local and national professional conferences and also enjoys delivering community-based education on colorectal cancer.
She lives in the Twin Cities area with her husband, Dr. Daryll Dykes – an orthopaedic spine surgeon – and their children.
